About Us

Our beautiful marina was once land that was part of a manor; belonging to one of the largest agricultural companies in the Netherlands. And in 1898 the land was taken over by the government, then in 1900, the then Ministry of Public Works dredged and equipped the harbour for use as a ferry terminal.

tramhaven_History of Marina Numansdorp

On October 15th 1900, the first ferry sailed to Willemstad and this was soon followed another ferry to Ooltgensplaat and Zijpe, and later another route was added to Den Bommel.

Over the years, the port has had many names, the first we could find was Spoorweghaven which was later changed to Empire Haven, then Tram Port and later, Ferry Terminal. But of course it’s now known as Marina Numansdorp.

The Rotterdam Tramway Society was originally given rights to use three piers on the west side of the harbour and there was a building close to where the harbour office is now, where passengers who arrived from Rotterdam by tram could wait for the ferry.

Cargo transport, to and from the port, was of great importance at that time and on the north side of the harbour there were three jetties at different heights from which the goods brought by rail were then shipped out by ferry and barge alike.

The Rotterdam Tramway Society was the also first tram network in the world to work with containers but in 1957 street cars carrying goods went out of use, and so the marina’s location as a part of a goods transportation network came to an end.

Construction of the Haringvlietbrug in 1964 (the bridge over Holland’s Diep close by us) brought about more changes in the area, and the ferry became unnecessary; with the last transport to Willemstad in 1966, leaving our small port open to new owners and new functions.

In 1990 Waldi Wiedmer and Jeannet Klick bought the shipyard at the rear of the marina, with plans to build a Catamaran to charter in the Caribbean (where they met originally), but due to their hard work the shipyard went from strength to strength and became very successful – and of course, plans changed when they had kids, and they settled down somewhat.

At that time the shipyard owned several berths in the marina which were naturally in demand by customers of the shipyard, and so was born the idea of making the marina into an additional going concern.

Jeannet and Waldi eventually bought out the public and council owned berths in order to further expand and offer more facilities to their customers – holding a grand opening of the newly refurbished and modernised marina in June 2002.

Lastly, the shipyard business was sold to the Rexwinkel family in 2012, and to this day both the shipyard and marina continue to help boat owners get the most out of their vessels and enjoy the local water ways from a calm and relaxing environment.

Our Team

In the present, our marina continues to be a family run business catering to boat owners who enjoy a well maintained harbour with a relaxed atmosphere. And although you’ll still see 3 generations of family members in the harbour office and down on the jetties, here is our introduction of the main faces you’ll see day to day in and around the marina:

Jeadiz O’Donnell-Wiedmer

As Jeadiz grew up in the shipyard and marina; she was harbour master and heart and soul of the marina from her teenage years up into her mid-twenties, and now, after living in Ireland for a time, she is back and enjoying working in the family business once more.

She is educated in the field of Wildlife Management and has also worked in Customer Services, Administration, and Executive Management; and being an animal enthusiast, takes care of many types of animals as well as building great relations everyone she comes into contact with.

In the marina, you will often see her managing the harbour office and giving our top hospitality (as she even speaks 4 different languages!), or you might have contact with her regarding invoices or our book keeping. She’ll always do her utmost to give you a warm welcome and cater to your needs, so you can enjoy use of our services and facilities and have a great time in the harbour.

Kai Wiedmer

Having grown up on the shipyard with a strong affinity for water sports, Kai has been a harbour master for the family business for the last 5 years, and has gained great experience at handling everything and anything that can be thrown at one when dealing with boats and a marina.

He also worked in Sales and Customer Service, having risen to Sales Team Manager in a couple of companies prior to taking on the harbour master role. And should you need any help with your boat or our facilities, even in an emergency, he is always ready to jump into action!

Not least of all, Kai is also a World Record holder for rowing across the Atlantic! In 2020/21, he and Mark Slats rowed as a 2 man team in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, rowing all the way from the Canary Islands to Antigua in a time of 32 days, 22 hours and 13 minutes becoming the fastest pair to row across the Atlantic; a World Record that still stands to this day!

Michael O’Donnell

Husband to Jeadiz, Michael can often be found tending to the maintenance and upkeep of the marina and grounds; but also works as harbour master and on other aspects of the business – including having built this website.

He has a background of working in Country Estate Management, Customer Service, Marketing and in Managerial/Training roles, and since joining the family Wiedmer and moving over here from Ireland, he has added his digital marketing and physical skills to the team; enjoying the out-door work as much as messing about on his computer or taking photo’s and video of our beautiful environment.

Should you need anything at all, or have spotted something that needs fixed or you would like done in the marina or grounds, do get chatting with him, but please keep in mind that he’s learning Dutch and so might need to switch to English back and forth.
